Young Malaysians Invented Malaysia’s First Self Driving Car

Kuala Lumpur, 26 September 2017 - REKA Initiative, a leading IoT provider in Malaysia successfully built Malaysia’s first self driving car powered by their own IoT development board called RIG (REKA Innovation Gear). The self driving car named CRETA made its first appearance to the public at Kuala Lumpur Engineering and Science Fair (KLESF) in November 2016 and had made a successful trip from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur without any driver.

REKA already completed developing the first version of RIG, an IoT development board which enables the user to connect to their product to the internet and build their own IoT infrastructure. In the meantime, the team also focused on bringing motor vehicles “to live” such as CRETA which reanimated by REKA Innovation Gear (RIG) in order to make the car fully autonomous.

“It was a good opportunity to introduce to Malaysians especially students and makers about REKA Innovation Gear (RIG), REKA’s very own IoT development board that we have been planning to build since January 2016. “We believe that the applications of Internet of Things (IoT) is more than just driverless cars or connected homes, it’s a gateway to an almost limitless potential in which enables anyone to innovate and create hence we wanted to play an active role in being a provider in IoT solutions” said the CEO of REKA Initiative, Muhammad Haziq Faris Hasnol.

Despite the success of CRETA, Haziq believed that the completion of their technology is still 20% and the project is still far from ready for the market. “Even giant tech companies such as Google and Tesla took years to perfect their self driving cars and still working on some other areas to make sure the product is safe to use” said Khairul Muzzammil, REKA’s Chief Research Officer.

REKA believed that IoT has a big potential in many fields such as medical, agriculture and healthcare. In addition of doing research, the team also plays an active role in sharing the knowledge or awareness of technology to students from high school to university level. On May of 2016, REKA launched an initiative called F.uT.U.Re. Program (Fun with Technology Untuk Remaja), a program to spread awareness in digital and green technology amongst high school students around Malacca.
